Leprosy Rehabilitation Program
The rehabilitation of the LAPs was started with the blessings
of Swami Tapasyananda, President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, in 1989. Ever
Since, it has continued with the support and the directions of the succeeding
Presidents, Swami Smaranananda and Swami Gautamananda.
Although leprosy is curable with regular Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) treatment, the
ulcer and deformities force the affected persons to segregate themselves from
the family and society, lose jobs, lose self-respect, self-confidence and take
to begging.
Sri Ramakrishna Math aims at total reintegration of the LAPs into the community
in which they live, taking part in all its activities as contributing members of
the society.
The needs of LAPs are prevention of dehabilitation and rehabilitation for the
already dehabilitated persons.
We have a long way to go to restore the basic human rights of LAPs. People do
not want to beg if given alternatives fitting their aptitudes and skill levels.
They can be properly motivated with patience and understanding. Bringing out the
inherent qualities and talents of LAPs and helping them to uncover the potential
is more important than display of sympathy.
Self Help Groups (SHGs) among the LAPs has no doubt motivated and empowered them
to generate income and improve the quality of life.
